On International Day Against Drug Abuse today
What is the issue?
What causes the issue?
What is the issue?
Drug abuse is the intake of toxic substances like Heroin,
Opium, Alcohol, Cannabis and Propoxyphene etc. which causes an addiction and
serious harm to mind and body of a person. A person involved in drug abuse is
in immense distress. Once taken, these toxic substances generate an extreme
desire to repeat its intake in a person. It is really very hard for an addicted
person to refrain himself or herself from drug intake despite owning knowledge of
its harms and a wish to overcome. The life of a person involved in drug abuse
is very miserable and ruined, if timely and necessary assistance is not
provided.
Researchers reveal
that children and adolescents are most likely to become victims of drug abuse. This
is probably because childhood is a time for experimentation. Children and
teenagers often become a victim of it just because of their curiosity, though lifestyle,
friends, cultural factors and psychological factors also expose children to
drug abuse.
How serious is the issue?
According to Childline India:
* Around 63.6 % of patients of drug abuse who come for treatment
are introduced to drugs at below 15 years of age.
* In India, around 13.1% of the people involved in drug and
substance abuse are 20 years in age.
* The 0.4% and 4.6% of total treatment seekers in various
states of the country were reported to be children.
* A World Health Organization study states, "If current
trends continue, 250 million children alive today will be killed by
tobacco." The business of drugs is third largest in the world only after
the business of petroleum and arms.
What causes the issue?
National Institute on Drug Abuse marks the following common causes
that develop risk of drug abuse, especially among children:
- Unbalanced environment at home such as, mental illness of the parent or parents’ involvement in drugs
- Unhealthy relationship with parents
- Inadequate supervision of parents
- Use of drugs by friends/peers
- Undesirable parental behavioral
- Poor parenting leading to loneliness or severe dark space in a child’s heart
- Poor achievement in school
Conditions similar to the listed above mixed with
availability of drugs and/or company of friends who are exposed to drugs exponentially
increases the risk of a child to become a victim of drug abuse.
Hence, right parenting is a must to protect children and adolescents
from the miserable life of a drug abuse.
Today, that is, 26 June is the International Day
Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the message of United Nations urges to all parents, “Listening to
Children and Youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe”. So, always listen to your child and provide
them right nurturing, care and home environment to prevent their involvement in
any kind of drug abuse.
This is a very good topic and glad you wrote about it. It is very important for parents to talk to their kids about it and make them aware.
ReplyDeleteThinking of drug abuse the best film that comes in my mind is UDTA PUNJAB..
ReplyDeleteThis film shows how difficult for person to refrain himself from the addition of drug.
I absolutely agree with you. Udta Punjab is worth talking when we talk about drug abuse as it shows a person unable to fight and a person able to fight that means the hope and despair both.
DeleteI am so happy you have written about this. Drugs is one of my biggest concern as Karma grows up and attends school in her teens. A lot of good schools are also facing this problem now days. This is a really helpful article!

Im also glad you found it helpful. Issues with school, especially high society schools, are also troubled to see teens involved in drugs. But role of parents is believed to be important to deal with such problem as many international organizations also believe.
